Location:  Library Meeting Room
Contact:
Description:  New members always welcomed!
Copies of the book can be reserved at the library.
Introduces readers to one of Stephen King’s most powerful creations, Roland of Gilead: The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which mirrors our own in frightening ways, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.

Inspired in part by the Robert Browning narrative poem, “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came,” The Gunslinger is “a compelling whirlpool of a story that draws one irretrievable to its center” (Milwaukee Sentinel). It is “brilliant and fresh…and will leave you panting for more” (Booklist).

The Book group will do a "field trip" in August to see the new movie version as well!  Date TBD by the group.  We can then discuss the movie and book together in September.  Popcorn anyone?

12:00 PM - 1:00 PMCookbook Book Club: EveryDayCook by Alton Brown

Location:
Contact:
Description:  EveryDayCook by Alton Brown
My name is Alton Brown, and I wrote this book. It’s my first in a few years because I’ve been a little busy with TV stuff and interwebs stuff and live stage show stuff. Sure, I’ve been cooking, but it’s been mostly to feed myself and people in my immediate vicinity—which is really what a cook is supposed to do, right? Well, one day I was sitting around trying to organize my recipes, and I realized that I should put them into a personal collection. One thing led to another, and here’s EveryDayCook. There’s still plenty of science and hopefully some humor in here (my agent says that’s my “wheelhouse”), but unlike in my other books, a lot of attention went into the photos, which were all taken on my iPhone (take that, Instagram) and are suitable for framing. As for the recipes, which are arranged by time of day, they’re pretty darned tasty.

Copies of cookbook are available from our library and through ILL.
Participants bring a recipe they have made to share with the group while they discuss the book and recipes. Great fun and food!
Bring containers to take home leftovers!

The presenters will discuss what kinds of things students can do to prepare for college and beef up their transcripts while staying true to their own interests, what types of colleges are out there and finding the right "fit" for your student, and some basics on the process of applying for schools and aid.  This will be a general overview and questions will be encouraged.  If there are more in-depth topics requested than can be covered in this session, the presenters have offered to come back and do tailored workshops on those topics.  Come and learn the ropes and help us shape future workshops on this important topic!

Location:  Library Meeting Room

Description:  New members always welcomed!
Copies of the book can be reserved at the library.
When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

The Book group will watch the film version first at 5PM, then discuss the book and movie together directly after the film ends.  Bring movie snacks and enjoy! If you just want to come for the flick..that's okay too!

Before Louisa met Will, her plans didn't reach beyond their tiny English town. Will, when he wasn't closing multimillion-dollar deals, blew off steam scaling mountains, leaping from planes, and enjoying exquisite women--until an accident left him paralyzed and seriously depressed. When his mother hires Lou to keep his spirits up, he meets her awkward overtures with caustic contempt, but she's tenacious and oddly endearing. Their fondness grows into something deeper, gaining urgency when she realizes his determination to end his life, and her efforts to convince him of its value throw her own bland ambitions into question.

Book Group- The Gunslinger (Darktower #1) by Stephen King New members always welcomed!

Cookbook Book Club: EveryDayCook by Alton Brown EveryDayCook by Alton Brown

Book Group- The Circle by Eggers New members always welcomed!
